This wine shop offers a great selection of natural wines from Italy, as well as a carefully curated bottles from Germany, Slovenia, and Greece. They select only winemakers, with whom they have established strong relationships through exchanges and personal visits (maybe too personal!). The knowledgeable and passionate staff, comprising Tobi, Anna, and Alessandro, all share a deep love for wine and winemaking. Their dedication to the craft is evident in their approach to presenting their wines. Rather than displaying the labels of the bottles [!], the staff prefers to engage with customers and talk about wine at length. One member of the staff, Alessandro, is a true expert when it comes to wine. His knowledge of the various grapes and varieties is unparalleled. He has talent for demystifying complex topics and making wine accessible to everyone. The staff at this wine shop is also deeply involved in the production of wine itself. They have their own vineyard in Sardinia apparently. The atmosphere of the shop is warm and welcoming, with a rustic charm. Overall, this wine shop is a gem of civilisation specifically in that part of Kreuzberg. You know what I mean if you live here.
Really cool and somewhat out of the ordinary selection of natural wines, mostly but not exclusively from Italy. Bottles here are stored horizontally, as they should be, in racks, so instead of choosing by label the best thing is to just let Anna, Tobi or Alessandro guide you through the lineup. The range offers something for every pocket and occasion, from easy everyday drinkers to more sophisticated and demanding wines (some special vintages have been laid aside for further ageing in the cellar, this is going be really interesting in a couple of years). But whichever you choose, the guys at mezzacantina really know their producers, so you’ll always get a proper story alongside your bottle.
Mezzacantina is the place where the love for wine meets passionate knowledge. The guys are always able to suggest the perfect wine for a dinner, for a present for a pic nic in the park….different price ranges and good variety of wines. Mostly from Italy but also from other countries. Be delighted also by the space…so charming and cozy ;) <3
Mezzacantina is that special place where to go find a bottle you didn't know about, to have a nice chat and straighten your mood. An unusual selection, that reflects the love and the taste for honest winemaking, that little has to do with passing fads and are rooted in well defined visions of farming and wine. A joyoous journey through Italy, many unusual Sardinian wines, and overall a wide offer that ranges - both in style and price - from afternoon wines to more complex wines that refer to more complex emotions. I love that the bottles are displayed horizontally: it's not the label that speaks, but the stories of the wine and those who made it, that Anna, Ale e Tobi are always up to share.
There are many things I miss of the Italian way of life since I have been living in Berlin, but one I don’t miss anymore is the neighbourhood wine shop where to lose myself among hundreds of bottles, because I found it in Mezzacantina! Anna, Tobi and Alessandro, like the best librarians, always suggest the best natural wine for any occasion, and let me discover lots of under-the-radar wineries and beautiful stories about wines! Thanks <3
