Les Pétavins: A Taste of the Alps Comes to Lyon

October 17, 2025 - 0 comments

The French Alps are beginning to get the wine reputation they deserve. It’s an area where rugged mountains, sun-soaked valleys, and centuries-old traditions come together to create wines full of character. This November, Lyon will get a rare chance to explore this Alpine diversity at 'Les Pétavins in Lyon', a wine fair dedicated to organic and natural wines from Savoie, Haute-Savoie, and Isère, an event for wine industry professionals.

But Les Pétavins is much more than a simple tasting. It’s a joyful collective of winemaking friends from the Alps, the association of organic winemakers Les Vignerons Bio des Alpes et de la Savoie, who organize national tours designed to showcase the richness and diversity of wines from Savoie, Haute-Savoie, and Isère. Lyon, the French capital of gastronomy, was a natural choice for the second stop after Marseille. As the organizers explain, “Choosing Lyon guarantees an audience of knowledgeable wine lovers and professionals eager to discover new estates, grape varieties, and terroirs.”

This edition marks the fair’s first visit to Lyon, and the team is delighted to meet the city’s discerning palates. “The Lyonnais are known to be more demanding than Parisians when it comes to gastronomy and wine,” one organizer admits. “That’s both a challenge and a source of motivation for us.”

Les Pétavins also offers a true immersion into the terroirs of the region. While Savoie, Haute-Savoie, and Isère share a clay-limestone foundation, each area contributes its own geological nuances that shape the wines. Marl formations, like those found in Chignin, bring a striking minerality that gives the wines their characteristic freshness.

Visitors will also have the chance to discover the grape varieties that define these Alpine wines. Jacquère, appreciated for its versatility and moderate alcohol, pairs beautifully with Altesse, known for its aromatic elegance and lively acidity. Red wine lovers will enjoy Mondeuse, with its structured tannins and Syrah-like personality, while Roussanne, locally called Bergeron, produces rich, expressive whites. For those seeking something more adventurous, rarer varieties like Verdesse, Mondeuse Blanche, and Persan offer truly distinctive flavors that reflect the very landscapes they come from.

Ultimately, Les Pétavins is about more than wine, it’s a story of place, tradition, and innovation. The organizers hope that every visitor leaves with a deeper appreciation for the Alps’ remarkable diversity: the richness of its soils, the authenticity of its native grapes, and the variety of winemaking approaches that bring them to life.
