Ratings suck. Stars too. Taste is not a number.

We live in a world that wants to rate everything: wine, food, music, places, people, even emotions. Everything gets a score, a number that tells us what’s good and what isn’t.

But taste doesn’t work that way. Taste is personal. It changes depending on the moment, the people at the table, and your mood. The same wine and the same dish can convey something completely different depending on the day, the place, or the person you’re sharing them with. So how could a number possibly capture that?

Algorithms try.

They analyze behavior. They compare. They predict what you might like. And sometimes, they aren’t entirely wrong. But they don’t really know you. A multitude of factors escape them. They know nothing about your state of mind, your thoughts, or how tired you are—things that might surprise or move you.

And what about ratings?

They don’t always help us discover new things; they can even limit us: one bad rating, and we don’t even give it a try. One very good rating, and we’re already expecting something specific. Without realizing it, we explore less… and judge more.

But a dish or a wine isn’t meant to be judged. They’re meant to be tasted, drunk, experienced, and shared. This is especially true of natural wine: it’s alive, it evolves, it breathes, and it surprises. Sometimes, it throws you off balance. You have to taste it to understand it.

So at Raisin, we’ve made a choice.

➜ We don’t rate wines.

➜ We don’t rate dishes.

➜ We don’t reduce experiences to numbers.

Instead, we put our trust in people: a wine merchant, a sommelier, a winemaker, a female chef, a male chef… People who taste, listen, share, bring people together, create, and take risks.

People capable of saying, “This isn’t what you usually drink or eat… but trust me. ” Because the most wonderful discoveries don’t come from algorithms. They come from encounters, a conversation, a spark of curiosity, or a shared moment.

If it nourishes the soul, it’s not something you jot down, it’s something you experience, love, and share.

So let’s stay curious. Stay open-minded. And keep discovering.
