The original Comodo opened its doors a decade ago on Macdougal street, in the West Village of New York. It was a small restaurant with only 25 seats, where Tamy and Felipe, a husband and wife team, brought the vibrant spirit of Latin American celebrations every night.
After five years, due to increasing rent costs, they were forced to shut down. Thankfully, the decision to move inside the Freehand hotel and bring Comodo back to life was made post pandemic. They have now been successfully operating at the hotel for the past two years.
While Felipe and Tamy are the founders, the true strength of the restaurant lies in their team, who are the heart and soul of the establishment. Lex Conlon is currently leading the team, with Viridiana Escamilla in charge of the wine program alongside Tamy. The entire team is knowledgeable and passionate, with many members being Latin American transplants or New York-born Hispanics. Their mission is to continue providing the warmth and hospitality found in Latin American culture, ensuring their guests feel truly comfortable. This is also the reason behind the name "Comodo," which means "comfortable" in Spanish. Additionally, they offer a carefully curated selection of natural wines.
Tamy believes that the natural wine scene in New York has significantly evolved over the years. It has not only gained recognition but has also become a symbol of high-quality ingredients and a commitment to artisanal food and beverages. People are now familiar with natural wine and its positive qualities, eliminating the need for extensive explanations or persuasion. However, Tamy emphasizes that the wine must still be of excellent quality, "funky" won’t cut it alone.
