HISTORY

Situated 3 km from the center of Siena, la Torre alle Tolfe is a 100-hectare farm that traces its name back to the VIII century when was built as a watchtower for the defence of Siena. The first written records of winemaking on the estate date back to 1316. The Castelli history on the estate dates to the 1950s and now, Mania Castelli and her family live on the estate representing the fourth generation to manage Torre alle Tolfe. We’re situated at 300 meters above sea level on a marine deposit from the Pliocene epoch (3-5 million years ago), which is why our soils are distinctively sandy. We have been certified organic since 2004 and are also part of Vinnatur, Vignaioli Indipendenti (FIVI), and Diversity Bio associations, in keeping with our commitment to steward the maximum expression of biodiversity and authenticity in our vineyards and wines alike.

WINEMAKING

Under the expert guidance of winemaker Teresa Castellani, we produce 7 wines: Chianti Colli Senesi, Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva, Rosato Lunella, Rosato Lunellà Frizzante, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo, and Colorino. We choose to vinify each of our 4 traditional grape varieties separately, which allows us to offer the unique opportunity to taste these varietals purely, as well as in blends in some of our Chianti wines.

VITICULTURE

Our 13 hectares of vineyards are certified organic and managed regeneratively by third-generation owner Mania Castelli and our agronomist Stefano Amadeo, who  together strive to work with nature and our local climate to produce abundant, organically grown grapes, with a positive impact on the land and its natural biodiversity. Our aim is to minimize as far as possible the use of technology and chemicals: these are seen more as a limitation than a help, standardizing the wines instead of letting their particularities and unique characters emerge. We use entomologic and botanic analysis of our soils to deeply understand our vineyards and the ecosystem that surrounds us. Our philosophy is to both support and be supported by every single living being.
