Azienda agricola Franzina - Mattia Franzina
The Franzina company develops vertically, on steep terraces torn from the mountain
Valtellinese. The whole family participates in the centuries-old succession of operations, because here the
viticulture is still done entirely by hand without mechanical aids.
The company was founded in 2014, after the experience outside the province to carry out studies in strong agriculture
is the dream of enhancing a difficult and almost abandoned wine-growing area in the country where I was born e
lived, Buglio in Monte. Starting from the family vineyards, they are recovered over the years
uncultivated terraces, buffered by abandonments, the surface is now close to one hectare, and brought back to life
the family winery in the heart of the village where Chiavennasca and other native vines are transformed
that we preserve from abandonment and oblivion like Rossola, Pignola, Brugnola,
Merlina, Balzamina. The whole family participates in the centuries-old succession of operations, I carry out the
main management of both the vineyard and the cellar, my wife has recently become the owner
of the company and my parents are the hands we can always rely on for
most intense moments of the season. In the company only the grapes we cultivate and take care of are transformed
personally all the phases of the process, from the processing of the vineyards, to the transformation,
to bottling and marketing.
The vineyards start from an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level. and reach up to 550 m.s.l.m. in
Valtellina the soils are moraine, very loose, rich in skeleton and tendentially sub acid.
We have now banned weeding and insecticides for more than 10 years and since 2019 we have been using, for phytosanitary defense, only products allowed in organic such as copper, mining sulfur and clays even if we have never taken the official path of organic certification. The first stimulus to this
change was to improve our work and living environment as ours
vineyards are within the village where we live. Even in the cellar our approach is very soft with spontaneous fermentations, no clarification or addition of tannins or enzymes and a light filtration in pre-bottling.
We currently produce two labels, a Rosso di Valtellina DOC (about 3000 bottles) and a
Valtellina Superiore DOCG (about 2000 bottles)
The motto on our bottles speaks for itself, each bottle purchased is 1 m² of vineyard landscape
terraced saved.
Tradition and naturalness are the leitmotifs of the management in the vineyard and in the cellar
allow us to transform the grapes from the vineyards of our ancestors into wines that tell of lands, roots,
hands and passion.
