The story of Sziegl Pince started in 2012 with an 80- year-old vineyard acquired as a free gift and a borrowed barrel. Our first wine was Kadarka, and the most beautiful parcel on the outskirts of Hajós became our favourite place to spend our free time. The old vines, the wonderful environment enchanted us quickly and soon became obvious that we imagine our future here, in our birthplace. It was the beginning of our twenties, those times we were attending the University of Horticulture, but at weekends we were hurrying home to cultivate the vineyard and we were looking for new parcels to buy. We spent our pocket-money and our income from the first wines on buying new parcels. It lasted 10 years, that we can harvest grapes from 8,5 hectares of vineyards. The capacity of the cellars also grew bigger: we have three traditional press-houses to make and store wines, one of it is also available for our guests.
We bought many old plantations, which are very valuable to us. Most of our vineyard is loess-clay subsoil, the soil is very heterogeneous: it ranges from humus and clayey sand to fine sandy soil, but here and there there is also brown forest soil. We practice careful viticulture and land management. The entire Sziegl vineyard has been using controlled organic farming since 2018. We mow the nettles ourselves, we pick dandelions as a spray. We believe that every vine has its own story, and we nurture each vine with painstaking hands to help it tell that story. It is important for us to find harmony with nature. We use strict controls to limit production. The grape varieties we want to grow on our estate are the following traditional varieties: Kövidinka, Kadarka, Olaszrizling and Kékfrankos. But we would also like to plant other old Hungarian varieties. In the wine cellar the fermentation is spontaneous, without adding extra yeast to the grape juice. For us, winemaking is a creative process. Every year we process the grapes according to our current inspirations, so we rarely make the same wine twice. We never use artificial additives except for minimal sulfur (max. 20mg/l) - not even for all wines. The better the grape, the less intervention is needed. This way we can make honest wines that reflect the nature of their habitat. We would like to show everyone the beauty of our surroundings, the uniqueness of the cellar wall in Hajós, and that the wines made here have a lot of potential.
Bottle design: the trees on our bottle labels symbolize plots and habitats. We think in landscape, not plantation. That is why we try to plant trees and bushes between our vineyards. We use the row spaces to provide a colorful and fragrant living space for many, many useful creatures. The trees characteristic of each vineyard are subsequently stamped on the paper - this also refers to manual work and care for our products. Small quantities of each type are produced, each bottle is numbered.
