In the southern Rhone Valley of France, just 12 kilometers east of Avignon, lies Domaine des Garriguettes…
A family wine estate for four generations, in the village of Châteauneuf de Gadagne. Sébastien Clément is a young winemaker with innovative and fresh artisanal expressions that honor the traditions of his Provençal village. The estate uses strictly natural and regenerative agricultural practices and produces Demeter-certified biodynamic wines from old vines. Made without chemicals or additives, Garriguettes offer wines of exceptional freshness, elegance and drinkability; a revelation in the south of France.
Domaine des Garriguettes benefits from the idyllic Mediterranean climate and exposure to the warm southern Mistral wind, which provide optimal conditions for organic and biodynamic viticulture. Old olive trees coexist among the Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah vines on the property, many of which have been in the family for generations. Garriguettes was the first vineyard in their village to adopt organic farming and continues to be a leader in natural viticulture in the region.
Châteauneuf de Gadagne is a charming Provençal village steeped in local traditions, with a long and illustrious history as a wine-growing village, one of the oldest in France - dating back at least to Phoenician culture.
Château de Gadagne once had its own vines at a place called “Les Garriguettes”, today cultivated by the Domaine des Garriguettes, hence its name. The region remained under papal rule until its incorporation into France in 1791. This heritage is visible in the imposing Palais des Papes in downtown Avignon, a historic destination for drinking the wines of the village of Gadagne.
Raised in the family wine estate, Sébastien inherited his passion for wine and his practical experience from his grandfather Jean-Clément and his father Jean-Louis very early on. Subsequently, Sébastien left the region to work in other vineyards for a few years, gaining valuable winemaking experience. Sébastien and the Domaine des Garriguettes have two guiding philosophies: a deep respect for the enhancement of their family heritage and their cultural traditions in the future, and a sensitivity and a sense of responsibility for their contribution to the balance of their ecosystem.
The blend of traditional and natural winemaking methods demonstrates their constant quest to produce high quality wines with progressive methods of regenerative and biodynamic agriculture, as well as natural winemaking techniques. All the vineyards of the Garriguettes estate are cultivated organically (Ecocert) and biodynamically (Demeter), since the 2010 vintage; however, Sébastien's father, Jean Louis, also worked without chemical intervention.
On 50 hectares of land, the Domaine des Garriguettes has 28 hectares of vines and 2 hectares of olive trees planted in a pastoral and mixed farming setting. They use cover crops for soil health and to reduce heat stress in vineyards, among other benefits. Two full-time and five part-time employees assist the family in the vineyards during the peak season.
In the cellar, Sébastien works intuitively with as little intervention as possible. Each vineyard and each vintage is treated individually; the only formula at the cellar is excellence. Native yeasts are used for the alcoholic fermentation of all the vintages, and the malolactic fermentations are spontaneous and never rushed. Added sulfur dioxide is not present in Le Béret Bleu and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and very little in the other wines. There is no dogma on sulfur, except that Sébastien strives to make the best and most expressive wine possible, with or without sulfur.
Sébastien Clément is a friendly, energetic and passionate ambassador of his culture who guides him in all his activities at Domaine des Garriguettes. You will often find him beaming with smiles, proudly wearing his grandfather's blue beret, blue hat, symbol of the working class of his region. It is important to understand that Sébastien's motivation is not only to produce wine; rather, he seeks to propagate a way of living in harmony with his native region, improving it along the way. There is a distinct positive energy and momentum that carries his work that is both captivating and inspiring.
