Domaine Valma - Valentine & Stéphane Mathieu

Domaine Valma was created by a couple in love with wine and Beaujolais, who cut their teeth in marketing and wine trading; that's where the project began to mature.

Valentine retrained by obtaining a vocational baccalaureate in agriculture and is now in charge of production. Stéphane is still involved in the fine wine trade, handling the commercial side of the estate. Beaujolais was the obvious choice; Stéphane was born here, the region is magnificent, and Gamay thrives here! Looking for land elsewhere was unthinkable... The estate is built on discussions, sharing experiences with fellow winemakers and neighbors, and the support of family!

Valma is a contraction of "Val" (the valley), characteristic of Beaujolais and more specifically of the lieu-dit where the estate is located, and "alma," meaning soul in Spanish or "to nourish/raise" in Latin. The objective is to create wines with soul and to cultivate the vines as naturally as possible.

We aim to build upon the best practices of traditional farming and ensure that our plots tell us what they need. To this end, we study bio-indicator plants and analyze our soils so that our vines can thrive in their natural environment. The goal is to respect nature and allow our terroir to fully express itself. Every action is guided by the needs of the plants, the vines, and our soils. We began our conversion to organic farming for the estate's 5.5 hectares in 2022.
