Poppelvej - Uffe & Jens Deichmann
Poppelvej are a owned and operated by me (Uffe) and my brother Jens (Jens is living back in Denmar, but comes to Australia about 4 month of the year.)
We are located in the Mclaren Vale Willunga Foot Hills in a 500 square meter shed overlooking the Gulf of St Vincent next to 10.8 hectares of organic grown (not certified yet) vineyard where we get our Mourvedre, Cabernet and Syrah from and I (Uffe) help manage it
and I am the one doing all the work in the vineyard. We are a carbon neutral winery, all energy comes from solar power from the roof and all water used is rainwater from two 120000 litre water tanks, all waste water is used for irrigation.
We process between 60-80 tons of grapes a year, 50% from McLaren Vale and 50% from Adelaide Hills, about 40% white and 60 % red. We hand pick 80% of our grapes, everything is wild fermented in 1 tonne
open fermenters, concrete eggs or barrels, no additives other than sulphur, to some of the wines, are added to the wine and everything that has skin contact is foot stomped by us, we deliberately do not own a crusher.
Our Philosophy Its only Uffe working at the winery in the day to day operations, but in harvest we are 2-3 people most days, all friends and family.
We do only use a small amount of French new oak and acacia for our Piccadilly Chardonnay wines, most of the barrels we got are more than 10 years old, 30% of that is 500-600 litre barrels, besides barrels we use Concrete eggs from Nomblot, we buy a new egg every year, so the plan is that 80% of the wines will be made in concrete in the future.
None of the vineyards we use are certified organic but they are all grown either organic or bio dynamic. We do not own any vineyard so all grapes are bought from winemakers that we trust, have a close relationship too and have the right philosophy about growing.
We are in the process of getting the grower to certify the vineyards, the first once will be the Paeroa vineyard, which is the vineyard that are located next to our winery and that I help manage, the other one is the LOT 13 Grenache vineyard which is also in the process.
