Turay Family Winery is located in Baj, Hungary, in the Neszmély Wine Region. The Family Winery was founded by István Turay and his wife Éva Turayné Székely in 2002 to preserve the traditions of the Turay Family. The Turay Family was engaged in winemaking, pálinka brewing and hospitality in today's Slovakia. However, in the storm of history, the areas were shunned by the family. The present cellar also has a serious historical background: it is more than two hundred and fifty years old and was built and used by the Capuchin order. Winery initially started as a hobby and a tradition, but Kamill Turay, seeing his parents ’love for nature, fell in love with winemaking.
Kamill does the viticulture and winemaking work on the 2.5 acres alone, and the family helps him with all the major work. The hospitality is run jointly by the family, led by Sára, Kamill’s sister, who has gained experience in several acclaimed restaurants. Sára tries to build the kitchen on the family’s own produce and local produce.
The vineyard is currently under the supervision of BioKontroll Hunágria Zrt., In 2021, we received bioorganic certification for both the cellar and the vineyards, which was preceded by several years of work.
We like to experiment, so there are many varieties of grapes in the vineyard: rozália, generosa, olaszrizling, solaris, borsmenta, pinot noir, blue franc, cabernet sauvignon. Kamill works alone in the vineyard, using only a small tractor, in the spirit of a bio-organic approach: spraying exclusively with contact agents: sulfur, copper, orange oil. Kamill limits the yield of grapes to a maximum weight of 1 kg per capital for higher quality. He also recently completed a Simonit and Sirch pruning course and he is very interested in the biodynamic approach as well. In the vineyard there is a row spacing cover of 13 herbs, which is rolled after flowering, not mowed. Because we want to create a diversity of biodiversity in the vineyards, we put bird houses and bee houses in the vineyards too. The family and friends do the harvest together by hand. Kamill while making wine, He also strives to give back the essence of the terroir in the bottle as much as possible. To this end, he is gradually trying to make more and more natural wines. Previous vintages were still fermented with organic yeast, however, by 2020, with spontaneous fermentation. He keeps the sulfur color of wines extremely low. The red wines are neither filtered nor clarified, among the white wines the Olaszrizling of the 2020 vintage and the Olaszrizling of the 2021 vintage are also unfiltered and unclear. The wines are usually fermented in steel tanks, the fuller batches are matured in wooden barrels. In the cellar there is a Stockinger barrel, two barrels from a Hungarian cooper from Balázs Dallos, and a Kádár Hungary barrel, as well as used French barriq barrels.
All in all, we can say that the Turay family, striving for high quality, strives to be more and more in harmony with nature and to provide more and more natural wines and food to its guests. We welcome our guests in the cellar, where they can admire the panorama of the Tata-Basin while consuming wines and food close to nature.
