dwnl ® is the acronym of drink wines, not labels. In the spring of 2019 I decided to develop a project that uses wine as a vehicle to bring a message by breaking some patterns. We are in the Langhe, a few meters outside the borders of Barolo: in 1980 an area of 11 municipalities was defined in which the renowned wine can be produced. My family, which has been producing wine for three generations, does not fall within this area by a few meters. Dwnl is a project that starts from a reflection, which stimulates constructive comparison. dwnl's philosophy starts from three questions concerning the relationship between product and value: PRODUCTION AND TERRITORY: Are we sure that a decision taken more than 40 years ago, which marked the lives of many people, is still valid today? CONVENTION AND QUALITY: Should the quality of a product and therefore its positioning on the market depend on a legal denomination? LABEL: Does it make sense that labels condition us so much? OUTSIDE was born on the basis of the reflections and questions that make up the dwnl philosophy, the wine that sums up the project: it follows the Barolo specification despite being outside the legal limits and will never obtain that denomination. The goal is to try to demonstrate during a blind tasting, without a label, the great similarity of the product to those within the boundaries. The dwnl production includes, in addition to OUTSIDE, more immediate wines that do not require long refinements and can be available on the market the summer following the harvest. The vineyards across the border, cultivated in a respectful way without the use of herbicides and chemical fertilizers, produce grapes that are fermented and vinified with the same philosophy used for Outside: whole bunch, indigenous yeasts, no fining and filtration and low quantities of sulfites.
