La Mercareccia - Fabrizio Zanfi

Three hectares of vineyard and two of olive grove, eight kilometers from the sea, on the Tyrrhenian coast, in the heart of Etruscan Tuscany.

The house is surrounded by a grove of completely organic vineyards, with varieties such as Sangiovese, whose proximity to the sea gives it a laurel scent; Syrah, which harnesses the Mediterranean sun and light to develop its varietal combinations of spice and fruit from year to year; and finally Ciliegiolo, which gives color and strength to the wine and whose generous simplicity only seemingly contradicts the sweetness implied in its name. The vines are spurred cordon, with a density of 6,000 vines per hectare; the soils are yellow sandstone, rich in fossil shells, evidence of an ancient marine origin. My small production of wine and oil is carried out with respect for the characteristics of the site, with just the right amount of technology and what I call " vintage science ," that is, knowing how to adapt one's work, and therefore the results, to the course of the season with its alternating rains and hot, dry spells.
