Azienda Agricola Cascina Barbàn - Maurizio Carucci, Martina Panarese, Pietro Ravazzolo, Maria Lùz Principe
Cascina Barbàn is an attempt, a collective.
A peasant project of two families.
An 18th century stone village that has been abandoned for half a century, located on a plateau in Alta Val Borbera at 500 meters above sea level, sheltered from the north winds and highly exposed to the sun.
An old farmhouse from the early twentieth century.
Cascina Barbàn is a testimony of rebirth, of a village, of a territory of an apparently distant, peasant world.
A non-industrial project, which has more to do with moons and people than with machines and automatisms.
We grow grapes, vegetables, wheat and fruit in a natural way.
Natural in the sense that we never use synthetic chemistry.
Green manure, manure, copper and sulfur as well as infusions and decoctions are the ingredients we use in our fields.
We look for and cultivate old varieties because they have seen more spring than the others and in our parts, in the Apennines, they behave better, grow healthier and more vigorously.
We are for Biodiversity not only for an ethical-social question but because it also means aromatic, agronomic, phenotypic and cultural complexity.
We are convinced that biodiversity in the fields helps crops to stay healthy and to offer excellent results even in disadvantaged conditions.
To date, we have planted about 4 hectares of vines of local varieties
and in collaboration with the CNR we discovered two almost forgotten varieties of Val Borbera that no one grows anymore and thanks to the work of our nurseryman Pierpaolo Santamaria we were able to multiply and plant them.
Low technology, long maceration on skins and lees, vinification in red.
We make wine like this.
