Podere Orto is located in the farthest reaches of Alta Tuscia; where the last stretch of Lazio straddles Tuscany and Umbria, our wines are born. The vineyards, planted between 2009 and 2018, are cultivated exclusively in the area around the town of Trevinano (VT) (altitude 619 meters above sea level). The high hilly area consists of primarily clayey-sandy sedimentary units from the Lower Pliocene.
All our work is the result of careful mass selection: we took the genetic material from an old vineyard planted in the 1970s in Orto (over time we have become its custodians); we were convinced that the only way to interact with a territory was to start from its origins. The land, 8.5 hectares of which approximately 4 hectares are vineyards, borders one of the largest green areas in central Italy: the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve, approximately 3,000 hectares of natural resources, vast forests, springs, streams, and a wealth of rare flora and fauna.
We have been practicing biodynamics since 2007 and are certified by ICEA for organic farming methods. Therefore, cultivation is chemical-free, and weed control and most vineyard work are done manually. The grapes are hand-harvested into small 20-kg crates between early September for the early-ripening varieties and late October for the late-ripening varieties. Fermentation occurs without additives, and bottling is unfiltered, with minimal sulfites added when necessary. Aging varies from a minimum of 18 months for white wines to 3-4 years for reds (between cellar and bottle). During vinification and cellar aging, we use neutral, low-porosity containers that ensure moderate contact with oxygen, striving to emphasize the connection between the grape variety and the terroir and highlight the true nature of our wine: no compromise between the grape and its aromatic heritage. The wines, despite having common denominators such as freshness, cleanliness and authenticity, are in fact different with each harvest: each year is different from the next, just as each of us, every year, has something different to tell.
We currently produce around 10-12,000 bottles annually, split across 4-5 styles. Once the grafts are completed in the last vineyard planted, we'll reach 15-18,000 bottles annually. However, we intend to remain an artisanal winery, carefully monitoring all stages of production.
