SCANDELARA is a project that was born within the Castel family farm Arienti, located in Scandelara (Bologna), founded in the eighties. Within the 52 hectares of property we find wooded areas, two small lakes, pasture meadows, a small part of arable land and two plots of vineyards, therefore a living, functional and minimally invasive ecosystem. The first vineyard planted in 1985, 0.5 hectares with about 4,000 vines per hectare and facing south, has mixed grapes: Pinot Bianco, Albana, Trebbiano, Riesling Italico. The second planted in 2000, of 3 hectares with 5,000 plants per hectare, has a northern exposure with grapes Chardonnay, Grechetto Gentile, Syrah and Barbera. The grounds are surrounded by badlands, with soils clayey-sandy that form layers of sandstone, with the presence of gray marl and gypsum. There it is within a protected natural area named "Pliocene Contrafforte". This type of conformation is the result of the sedimentation of sands and gravels carried by streams Apennines within a large marine gulf that in the Pliocene affected a large part of the current Apennines. Due to the raising and lowering of the sea level there were numerous cycles of sedimentation which makes this area unique today. The vineyards are managed in certified organic agriculture, integrated with operations related to biodynamic (use of herbal teas and decoctions with spontaneous plants and herbs present on the farm, inter-row sowing of legumes for green manure as fertilizer, respect for lunar rhythms, etc.). THE shoots are not topped. In the cellar neither additives, nor selected yeasts or bacteria are used, only a minimum quantity of sulfur if necessary. 30 mg / liter of total SO2 are never exceeded on all wines. They follow each other the phases of the moon for transfers and bottling. The aim is to represent the territory, the vintage and the grape varieties used through these wines through slow, spontaneous processes and without any kind of forcing. These wines are designed to be smooth, fresh, easy to drink but never dull.
