His son Georges carried on the know-how and traditions until 1990. The next generation, Olivier, focused on viticulture, until the arrival in 2019 of Clément, Léon's great-grandson, who was determined to take up the mantle and revive winemaking. By naming his estate "Léon," Clément Robert pays tribute to his great-grandfather.
The ambition to produce unique wines, reflecting their terroir
After some travels and experiences in vineyards both in France and abroad (Champagne Fleury, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand), Clément Robert had a very clear idea of what he wanted to do: to take things to the next level, extending the work done in the vineyard by vinifying and marketing his own wines. It was with this in mind that he created Domaine Léon.
The estate covers nearly 8 hectares, spread around the village of Landreville in the Aube region. It produces four Champagne grape varieties: the traditional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier, as well as Pinot Blanc, a historic Landreville grape. From the vineyard to bottling, meticulous care is taken at every stage of production. No external contractors work on the estate; all tasks, from pruning to labeling, are carried out by the estate's own team.
In the vineyards: light soil cultivation, natural grass cover throughout the year, and the use of plant infusions to complement organic treatments... Since 2019, Clément has been progressively converting the estate's vineyards to organic farming and has embraced biodynamic practices, convinced of the importance of evolving cultivation methods. The estate will be certified organic in 2022 and Demeter in 2024. In the cellar, to allow the terroir to express itself as naturally as possible, the same philosophy prevails: limited inputs, fermentation with indigenous yeasts... The estate has also chosen to vinify and age its wines in oak barrels, a living material that imparts a unique character to the wines.
