Agricola La Mision, located near the village of Cauquenes in the Maule Valley, Chile was founded in 2016 by Elena Pantaleoni, famous Italian winemaker from the La Stoppa estate and her friend Nicola Massa, also a wine professional. Wine has been produced in the region since the 16th century thanks to Spanish missionaries and today some (non-grafted) vines are between 100 and 300 years old. Nicola Massa has spent many months in the region to meet former producers and understand their way of working. In 2016 he selected 4 hectares of vines over 100 years old, ungrafted and non-irrigated, planted on granite soils. This estate gives pride of place to pais, the oldest grape variety planted in the country, which allows them to safeguard the region's century-old vineyards. Here, wine production is as natural as possible, from work in the vines (without pesticides, plowing on horseback, manual destemming, etc.) to that in the cellar (trampling underfoot, spontaneous fermentation, long maceration on the skins, aging in old barrels, no added sulphites and no filtration). The aim of the estate is to promote their typical grape variety thanks to natural wines with great aging potential.
