Les Foulards Rouges

After making wine from 1989 to 2001 for the Estezargues winegrowers' cooperative (Côtes du Rhône), Jean-François Nicq and his childhood friend Bijan Mohamadi (a mathematics professor at the University of Montpellier) bought a vineyard in the Pyrénées-Orientales. They named it "Domaine des Farrons Rouges" (Red Scarf Estate), a reminder of their activist past and a tribute to Frédéric Fajardie, author of neo-realist crime novels and a humanist revolutionary saga, "Les Farrons Rouges" (The Red Scarves).

Thus, on January 1, 2002, the estate was established. The choice of organic and natural methods was a natural continuation of the experience gained at the Estezargues winery. The vines were converted to organic farming (AB) in the first year, and the winemaking process is entirely natural, meaning without any additives whenever possible (indigenous yeast, no sulfur, filtration, or fining). Bottling is done manually and by gravity (no pumps). The estate, which comprised 9 hectares in 2002, has since expanded through additional plantings and leases.
It currently has an area of 15ha and produces 30,000 bottles on average each year.
