Among my favorites, one of Gabriele's beautiful creatures. Talking about Tuscany, people normally thinks about Sangiovese, Montalcino or Supertuscan, but we are very far away from this idea. Podere Concòri is in Lucca province, precisely in Fiattone in Garfagnana, where Gabriele is carrying out his project since '99. Former host, after a self-taught experience in France, he recovered the vineyards belonging to his father with the intention of giving new hope to the highest vineyard area in the region (400m above sea level), little suited to the production of wine but rich in natural heritage. These vineyards are closed in the embrace of two regions, between the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, with a strong influence of the Serchio river and of the soil made of sandstone, shale and silica. The approach is biodynamic: no clarification, no filtration. Everything undergoes spontaneous fermentation 🐝 Together with Syrah, Gabriele grows Pinot Noir, Chenin Blanc (thanks to the friendship with Nicolas Joly), Pinot Blanc and Traminer. For the red "Melograno" (that in Italian means 'pomegranate") we have 🍇 Syrah with a small percentage of old Ciliegiolo and Carrarese almost forgotten varietals of Tuscany). Fermentation takes place spontaneously in open vats, after which the wine ages in small, unroasted barrels for 10 months. The beautiful name heralds the bright color found in the glass, a glass that is initially a bit dusty but slowly reveals all the energy of the spices and herbs: juniper berries, licorice root and dry bay leaf, but behind the scenes we can hint a bit of sweetness: dried rose's petals, a beautiful and refreshing red orange juice with its fresh zest. The more I wait, the more the glass continues to press its accelerator on the balsamic part, so that my nose is taken back to the time I was walking in the eucalyptus woods of Galicia, during my Camino of Santiago de Compostela. And again, bitter tips of resin, propolis and medicinal herbs. In the mouth it is an explosion of structure and freshness, a Christmas black tea made of cinnamon and dried citrus peel. Fill a bucket with it and drink, drink, drink 😍
Stupendo.
