Via del Gelso is a project born from a passion shared with my father, that for our land.
Since I was little I have always followed my father in the vineyard, during the grape harvest, and I have always admired my father's devotion in taking care of his land. Always passionate about art and music, at the age of 18 I decided to move to France to undertake my studies in musicology and at the conservatory.
With the years spent abroad I gradually realized that something was missing in my life and only over time did I understand that I had to return to Sicily and take care of my land in turn. Since 2021, I have returned to Sicily, to Marsala, starting my journey as a winemaker.
More than a year ago I started working with my father in the vineyard to learn the trade. To this day, he and I take care of our vineyards together. My goal with this wine is to be able to convey my passion for art and my love for my land because I have learned that cultivating a vineyard is an art form that gives life to an incredible connection between man and nature.
THE PROJECT: For several generations, my family has cultivated the Catarratto variety. 15 years ago my father introduced another variety into production, Zibibbo, which together with Catarratto are part of the native white grape varieties of the province of Trapani. This is why a blend was created to produce my wine. I wanted to vinify the two varieties together to combine the grapes and create a balanced wine that represents and enhances the two most important varieties of our area. The grapes were carefully selected from four different plots. We carefully followed the evolution of the ripening of the grapes, taking samples regularly before the harvest to try to find the right moment for harvesting.
HARVEST: Hand harvested in August.
The Catarratto and Zibibbo grapes were harvested together and manually selected from four different plots with different degrees of ripeness to obtain a balanced blend
VINIFICATION: The grapes of the two vines were vinified together in steel with direct pressing and spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeasts.
For bottling the wine was not filtered.
AGING: 6 months in steel
The label was hand-drawn by a French artist friend: Alexandre Peutin
When Alexadre came to Sicily I showed him our country house with our vineyards around it in the "Gelso" district, this place was the inspiration for my label. I wanted the design of my first label to represent the place where my project was born and Alexandre managed to best represent it with a hand drawing made with squid ink.
