Urban Wine Growing NUSSBERG – GRINZING Vineyards in a metropolis – which many people find astonishing – has a long tradition here in Vienna. In a nutshell: Our vineyard sites are first class and focus on the Nussberg and the district of Grinzing. Due to the minerally shell limestone and weathered limestone soils, the wines are highly expressive and mineral-toned. Unique Location MARINE TERRACE The Nussberg is a marine terrace that was formed by movements of the sea millions of years ago. The soil features extensive chalky deposits from ancient marine life. The shape of the Nussberg is the result of repeated breaks at the top of the mountainous hill and the effects of ebb and tide. The massive bedrock lies between one and three meters deep. Periodic marl and clay sediments are found in the impermeable layers of the lower vineyard sites, allowing for water storage that supplies the grapevines during dry periods. Biodynamic Viticulture THE FOUNDATION OF OUR QUALITY Our vineyards. We like to talk about them. And about our obsession with quality. Which lead us to biodynamic viticulture. Since 2006, we‘ve been on this path, and it demands a great deal from us. It also confirms exactly why we’ve been inspired by it in the first place! The rewards are tremendous – with such original wines of character. We Embrace Diversity… The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. We fully believe in the Weinberg ecosystem and all its facets. We promote biodiversity, using compost and biodynamic preparations – all in harmony with nature. Our vines certainly enjoy this. With such an activated soil life, they are resistant and carry healthy grapes. Honest Handwork… The vineyards need also fingers that perform finely. Driven by passion, we work almost exclusively with our hands. The pruning is balanced, the leaf work is sensitive and the harvest is selective and meticulous – just as it all should be. Our Wines Simply Sophisticated Our lively wines have subtle corners and edges. And it’s good this way, because we love natural, authentic wines. Each one has a characteristic soul, which develops from the natural flavours of the grapes and the terroir. All this comes to fruition thanks to our biodynamic cultivation. We also work gently and reductively in the wine cellar. Natural In search of the original. Our biodynamic approach and the handwork in the vineyards have led us also to old wine making methods. The first attempts have captivated us: This natural wine presents itself as stable, intense and expressive with generous fruit. Natural wine is fermented for a very long time on the skins and is neither fined nor filtered.
