Mogarén is a winery with a long tradition in Gran Canaria (Bottling Registry No. 6) and the Martel brothers knew how to bring it here, always making good wines. At the beginning of this 2021, Mario Reyes and Juan Rodriguez have taken charge of the project, giving a twist to the idea of what had been done until now.
The winery is located in Las Vegas de Valsequillo. It has about two hectares of vineyards planted free standing and owned by Listan Negro, Baboso Negro, Listan Blanco and small loose vines of other varieties. We also have two more plots in the town of Valsequillo and one plot in the Utiaca area (San Mateo) with a fairly similar varietal composition. The strains range from 20 years old to centennial strains of Listan Negro.
And they are mostly cultivated on trellises and trellises. Our main commitment has been the greatest respect for the natural environment, eliminating any synthetic chemical product and doing a great job of observation and manual work to, on the one hand, try to extract the maximum authenticity from the terroir and, on the other, recover the vineyard to begin with. to do it 'by hand'.
When the harvest arrived, we found ourselves in the previous weeks with a harsh climate, with the risk of diseases, reduction in production due to extreme drought and a heat wave of several days, which made us advance the start date of the harvest considerably. It was an exciting moment and at the same time a lot of tension where you had to decide what to do and how to do it. So, without hesitation and without fear, we decided to embark on the production of a Natural wine. Although this word is sometimes "scary". A free, spontaneous, alive, naked wine... A wine without intervention or more help than our hands, our feet and our love.
A wine that is 100% grape. An artisan product, without makeup, that the only thing it intends to show is the pure soul of a strain, turned into fruit and then naturally turned into wine. It was made in part with whole grapes in a steel tank for a week, to then be pressed and put back in steel until the end of fermentation. Then, without having filtered or clarified it, 50% was aged in a 500-litre 4th-use Magreñan French oak barrel for 2 months and blended for later rest until bottling in November 2021, on Flor day.
Everything is taken care of in it. It has all the affection of a group of people who dreamed with us, who have supported us until we put it in the bottle. We are not going to say that it is the best wine in the world, or more talk. But I do want to tell you that we are very proud of our courage and the result obtained.
