Delinquente Wine Company produces wine from Southern Italian grape varieties grown in The Riverland in South Australia. I grew up on a vineyard in the Riverland and it is my aim to make the wines that I enjoy drinking from my home. To that end, I purchase fruit from the Bassham Family Organic Vineyard in Barmera – these growers are revolutionary, employing organic viticulture (certification attached) and planting hardy Southern Italian grape varieties like Nero d’Avola, Montepulciano and Vermentino that can withstand the high heat and low rainfall we experience in the Riverland. The quality of the grapes is superb, the vineyard is alive and the wines I make are a true reflection of the land in which they are grown. My winemaking philosophy is to attempt to guide the wines into the bottle with as little intervention as possible. In the vineyard, I pick the vines earlier than is standard, resulting in finished wines that have high acidity and low alcohol. In the winery, the grapes are fermented with wild yeast, and the wines do not undergo any fining or filtration, except for the Nero d’Avola Rosato, which is filtered. I do not add anything to the wines, except for a small amount of SO2 prior to the wine leaving the winery to go to bottling. I do not add any SO2 to the pet nats – these wines are wat you might call “zero zero” wines. I endeavour to make simple wines, bottled young, with no oak or aging and meant to be drunk early – but they are honest wines, that highlight the beautiful fruit which is grown in the place that I was born.
