Daan and Edmee made a daring choice to take over restaurant Basaal, in January 2021, in the midst of the pandemic. The couple were living in London, Daan working as a chef, and Edmee in the wine industry. But when they heard that Basaal, in The Hague, was for sale, they took the chance and moved back to the Netherlands to open their dream restaurant.
Basaal is situated on the Dunne Bierkade, one of the most beautiful canals in The Hague and the original building is where beer used to be imported into the city. For the past 20 years though, Basaal has been a restaurant with a food philosophy that respected nature as much as possible. Daan and Edmee wanted to keep up this tradition but also add some of the exciting influences they had picked up in London. The restaurant continues to focus on seasonal ingredients, with the menu constantly changing depending on what was available and fresh. However, similar to their favourite restaurants in London, they wanted Basaal to follow the chef’s vision, and not simply churn out consumer favourites, which they feel has become a occurrence happening too often in Holland.
The result is a modern Dutch restaurant and wine bar, where the produce speaks for itself. The menu is dynamic and ever changing, and the wine list boasts over 125 bottles with 14 by the glass. Edmee is continuously on the hunt for new and exciting wines from all over the continent and the wine list is filled with natural and biodynamic wines that show the best Europe has to offer.
Basaal is a restaurant for every person with a love of food, wine and nature. Edmee and Daan’s passion can be felt throughout and you are rewarded, with every bite and sip you take.
